Starwars Commission

I thought I would test out my how-to skills and post an older drawing I did. This was a commission for my boss's son. He wanted all three stages of this piece so I did the pencils, then scanned it into the computer and inked it digitally and colored it in Photoshop CS2.

Naturally I did the pencils from references I found on the internet. I don't trace, but rather reference. I believe it reflects in the piece when you draw it from reference rather than tracing. Nothing wrong with tracing as many commercial artists have made a good living doing it, but I choose to draw instead.

Inks are not difficult for me and I generally ink with a number two brush and art pen, but in this case I did it on my Wacom Cintiq.

I don't like to go overboard with coloring techniques and I'm all about the subtlety of art. Make it look the way you want and that's all you need to do. I have two versions of the coloring. The first being the flats and some minor highlights.

The major highlights are last and they were just some brush work and gradients.
I don’t think this piece is the best I’ve done, but it was fun and looks pretty cool. It did the job for my boss’s son and that’s enough for now.

The beginning

I'm one of those guys that generally likes to do different things, but it seems everyone is starting or has a blog, so I guess this time I'll be jumping on the bandwagon. I'm hoping to start a regular thing here and post new works and how-to's every week, but we'll see if I can follow through. Things I'm working on this week are a sketch challenge for a redesign of Cage and I'm doing an Electra pinup for another challenge. Both can be seen from Ten Ton Forum when I post the results.

Since I'm going to be working on the Electra pinup when I get home tonight I'll post the results and perhaps show a little on how I did it.
